5-Day Sahara Desert Adventure: From Fes to Marrakech

We begin our journey early from Fes, heading south into the Middle Atlas Mountains. The road takes us through ever-changing scenery, from cedar forests to rocky plateaus. Our first stop is the charming town of Ifrane, often referred to as the "Switzerland of Morocco" due to its alpine-style architecture and clean mountain air.Next, we continue to Azrou, known for its cedar forest that is home to Barbary macaques, friendly wild monkeys that often come down from the trees to greet visitors. We then pass through the apple capital Midelt, nestled between the Middle and High Atlas Mountains, where we stop for lunch with views of the surrounding peaks.In the afternoon, we follow the road through the magnificent Ziz Valley, known for its endless palm groves, Berber kasbahs, and green oases. By sunset, we arrive in the gateway to Merzouga, where the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi rise dramatically from the flat horizon. After breakfast, we take a 4x4 tour around the dunes to discover the desert lifestyle. We visit the village of Khamlia, where the local population traces its roots back to Sub-Saharan Africa. Here, you will enjoy a live performance of Gnawa music, a spiritual and rhythmic genre with deep cultural roots.We then visit nomadic Berber families who still live in traditional tents made from camel and goat hair, far from towns and roads. This is a unique opportunity to learn about their customs and way of life in the harsh desert environment. Along the way, we also visit fossil sites and explore ancient desert landscapes.In the late afternoon, your camel trek begins. Guided by a camel man, you'll ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes, some of which tower over 150 meters high. Along the way, enjoy a stunning desert sunset before reaching your luxury desert camp, where you’ll be welcomed with mint tea and Berber hospitality.After a delicious dinner under the stars, sit around the fire with live drumming and storytelling, a magical night in the Sahara.

After an early wake-up call to watch the sunrise over the dunes, enjoy breakfast at the camp before riding back to Merzouga on camels or by 4x4. We then continue to Rissani, once an important trading center and the cradle of the Alaouite dynasty, Morocco’s royal family. If time allows, visit the traditional souk and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif.We journey toward the Todra Gorges, a spectacular canyon carved by the Todra River. The high vertical cliffs here are a favorite among climbers and photographers. You’ll have time to walk between the gorge walls and explore the lush palm groves nearby.In the afternoon, we continue through the Dades Valley, known for its dramatic rock formations like the “Monkey Fingers” and picturesque kasbahs nestled along the road. The landscapes here are surreal, with red rock canyons and winding roads offering panoramic views.

After breakfast, we continue our journey through the Valley of Roses, especially famous in spring when thousands of rose bushes bloom and the local cooperatives produce rose water and cosmetics. We pass through Skoura, home to one of Morocco’s most beautiful palm oases and many historical kasbahs.We arrive in Ouarzazate, often called the Hollywood of Africa, due to its film studios that hosted movies like Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, and Game of Thrones. Optional visit to the Atlas Film Studios is available.Later, we reach the famous Aït Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an ancient fortified village built entirely from earth and clay. You’ll have time to walk through its alleys, climb to the top for panoramic views, and learn about its role in Moroccan history and cinema.

On our final day, we cross the High Atlas Mountains, taking the scenic route through Tizi n’Tichka Pass, the highest mountain pass in Morocco at 2,260 meters above sea level. Along the way, enjoy breathtaking views, Berber villages perched on the hillsides, and small breaks to capture the beauty of the mountains.We descend into the red plains of Marrakech, where the journey ends in the late afternoon. Drop-off at your riad or hotel marks the end of your 5-day adventure — but the memories of desert sunsets, mountain passes, and Moroccan hospitality will stay with you forever.
