We begin our journey early from Fes, heading south into the Middle Atlas Mountains. The road takes us through ever-changing scenery, from cedar forests to rocky plateaus. Our first stop is the charming town of Ifrane, often referred to as the “Switzerland of Morocco” due to its alpine-style architecture and clean mountain air.Next, we continue to Azrou, known for its cedar forest that is home to Barbary macaques, friendly wild monkeys that often come down from the trees to greet visitors. We then pass through the apple capital Midelt, nestled between the Middle and High Atlas Mountains, where we stop for lunch with views of the surrounding peaks.In the afternoon, we follow the road through the magnificent Ziz Valley, known for its endless palm groves, Berber kasbahs, and green oases. After an early wake-up call to watch the sunrise over the dunes, enjoy breakfast at the camp before riding back to Merzouga on camels or by 4×4. We then continue to Rissani, once an important trading center and the cradle of the Alaouite dynasty, Morocco’s royal family. If time allows, visit the traditional souk and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif.We journey toward the Todra Gorges, a spectacular canyon carved by the Todra River. The high vertical cliffs here are a favorite among climbers and photographers. You’ll have time to walk between the gorge walls and explore the lush palm groves nearby.In the afternoon, we continue through the Dades Valley, known for its dramatic rock formations like the “Monkey Fingers” and picturesque kasbahs nestled along the road. On our final day, we cross the High Atlas Mountains, taking the scenic route through Tizi n’Tichka Pass, the highest mountain pass in Morocco at 2,260 meters above sea level.
